Instrument Playing Card Activities SET 01

instrument cards 01
FIRST THINGS FIRST: Print out your own set of collectible instrument cards.  (Here’s a link to the special file for printing.)  Print four copies of the sheet on heavy card stock (you can find it at most craft or computer stores) then cut out the cards.  You will have four of each of the instruments.  Now you are ready to play!

Go Fish– Instrument Identification

Setup: The dealer deals 5 cards to each player (7 each for 2 players). The remaining cards are placed face down to form a stock.

The youngest player starts.

How to Play: A turn consists of asking a specific player for a specific instrument card. For example, if it is my turn I might say: 'Mary, please give me your banjos'. The player who asks must already hold at least one card of the requested instrument, so I must hold at least one banjo to say this. If the player who was asked (Mary) has cards of the named instrument (banjos in this case), she must give all her cards of this instrument to the player who asked for them. That player then gets another turn and may again ask any player for any instrument already held by the asker.

If the person asked does not have any cards of the named instrument, they say 'Go fish!'. The asker must then draw the top card of the undealt stock. If the drawn card is the instrument asked for, the asker shows it and gets another turn. If the drawn card is not the instrument asked for, the asker keeps it, but the turn now passes to the player who said 'Go fish!'.

As soon as a player collects a book of 4 cards of the same instrument, this must be shown and discarded face down. The game continues until either someone has no cards left in their hand or the stock runs out. The winner is the player who then has the most books.

Instrument Memory

Goal: To collect the most pairs of cards.

Setup: Shuffle the cards and lay them on the table, face down, in a pattern (e.g. 4 cards x 9 cards).

How to Play: The youngest player goes first.

When a player turns over two cards that do not match instruments, those cards are turned face down again and it becomes the next player’s turn.

Players keep each pair they find. At the end of the game, each pair scores one point.

Winning: When all the pairs have been found, the player with the most points wins.

Instrument Charades

Charades is a game of pantomimes: you have to "act out" playing an instrument without speaking, while the other members of your team try to guess what the instrument is. The objective is for your team to guess the instrument as quickly as possible.

Extra Equipment you'll need:

  • a stopwatch or other timing device
  • a notepad and pencil for scorekeeping
  • instrument cards – you’ll only need nine – one for each instrument

Setup: Divide the players into two teams, preferably of equal size.

How to Play:

Each round of the game proceeds as follows:

  • A player from Team A draws an instrument from the deck. After he/she has had a short time to review the slip, the timekeeper for team B notes the time and tells the player to start. Team A then has 15 seconds to guess the instrument. If they figure it out then the team gets a point. If they do not figure it out the timekeeper announces that the time is up, and team B gets a turn.
  • A player from Team B draws an instrument card and play proceeds as above.

Normally the game continues until all the cards are used. The team with the most points wins the game.

The Players in the Band!

This is a brand new game from the Biscuits!

Setup: The dealer deals each player four cards.

The youngest player gets to go first.

STEP ONE: Play a favorite song on your iPod or a CD player. (HINT: If you're a newsletter subscriber, here's where that free download of "Froggie" will come in handy!)

STEP TWO: Look at your cards and see if any of the instruments on your cards are playing in the song.

STEP THREE: If an instrument in the song matches one of your cards you can play your card. (Just one card at a time) If none of the instruments match you can discard one card but you have to draw another one from the deck.

STEP FOUR: Take turns until someone runs out of cards or the song is over.

WINNING: The first person to run out of cards wins.Or the person with the fewest cards when the song is over wins.

Be sure to try all different styles of music!

It’s also fun to just listen to music by yourself and select the cards that make up the band that you hear. How many different musicians do you hear? What might each person look like? Are there instruments that you hear that you don’t have a card for? Can you draw your own instrument cards of other instruments?

There are lots of things you can do with instrument cards. We’ll have more ideas for you when we release Volume 2 – Instruments of the Orchestra!
